Big Deals for the week of August 30, 2010:
Stop Buying What you Need!
People often ask me to share advice with them on the most important thing they can do to cut their grocery bill and keep more money. Without hesitation, I urge them, "Stop buying what you need!" This sounds confusing because it flies in the face of how 95% of us shop. We typically wait until we're out of a product, add it to the shopping list, and buy it along with all the other items we need that week. Somehow, we equate this with "doing without" in order to save money: "Don't spend that money on things we can get by without! We need that $100 for the things we only REALLY need this week."
Here's the problem... without doing something different, this cycle never changes. As long as you keep shopping like this, your budget will NEVER change. So, what do we do to try and save money? We shop at big discount stores. We shop at little discount stores. We buy generic products or oversize boxes at warehouse clubs. I know. My dear wife and I tried all this stuff. Still, our budget never budged ! It wasn't until we spent an entire summer researching all the experts that we figured out the secret to getting the lowest price on almost all products: coupons combined with the lowest possible sale prices. But... that's only the first part. That simply opens you up to the world of savings - but leaves you with a great deal of work each and every week to keep your family fed and cared for.
In my opinion, just as important as printing or clipping coupons and knowing exactly when and where to use them is the commitment to buy what you don't need. Simply put, when you get tremendous deals, this is the time to load up and buy many months worth of those products while buying as few "need" items as possible. This might mean that you'll have some imbalances for the first month or two - but after 12 weeks, you will have most of what you need... in your OWN pantry! From this point on, your should easily be able to spend HALF of what you originally spent to feed and care for your family. Most families' "need-list" will shrink to less than $100 a month - with the rest of the budget used for buying only the best coupon/sale combinations. Twelve weeks invested will reap years and years of financial benefit.
Here is the litmus test for whether or not you are doing this right: When pulling your cart to the register, you should get some odd looks from the 95% of shoppers who shop the old-fashioned, expensive way (including the checker - unless s/he's a SavingsAngel fan). Inevitably, you'll get the comment: "Wow! You really love (insert a great stock-up deal for the week)!" My reply is almost always, "I sure do... when I get them for 80% off!"
The easiest way to cut your grocery bill in half is through using manufacturer coupons combined with the best sales at local West Michigan stores. Normally, this takes a lot of work to create a winning shopping list for your family. Each week, SavingsAngel.com combines over 2,000 products on sale at local grocery and drug stores with their enormous database of manufacturer coupons which are found in Sunday's Grand Rapids Press and throughout the Internet. This combination results in access to over 300 products each week for 50% off or better. Here are a few examples of deals that are available until Saturday at midnight. Please look in Tuesday's Grand Rapids Press each week for tips on how you can easily start cutting your grocery bill.
